“Drone 1” takes its inspiration from the artist’s long-standing interest in the work of Adriaen Coorte, a still-life painter from the Dutch Golden Age. In Coorte’s compositions, space is extremely simplified, and the still-life objects are placed before a dark, almost transparent background. The treatment of light gives the objects an unstable state — as if they are both gradually appearing and slowly disappearing. This visual experience, hovering between emergence and fading, has had a lasting influence on the artist. The artist hopes to construct, in a similar manner, a kind of “still-life painting” that belongs to contemporary life — by simplifying space and intensifying the relationship with light, placing everyday technological objects and ordinary things under the same gaze, thereby re-understanding the way they exist.
