“Man with a Rubber Toy Ball ” adopts the form of a frontal portrait, which during the Renaissance was typically used to depict Christ or a monarch. The mirror in the background deepens the spatial depth and evokes the multiple meanings of mirrors in art history. But in this work by the artist, the ball that symbolizes power and status has been replaced by a child’s plastic toy ball, and the original solemn symbolic meaning is dissolved by this parody into an everyday joke.
