Moon” depicts a man standing in a room, pointing toward the window. The composition and pictorial elements of the work come from the ongoing influence of Dutch painting on the artist. The indoor scene is an important theme that continues throughout the artist’s practice — the artist wants to capture a certain surreal moment within an ordinary, calm state. The title of this painting, “Moon,” comes from a little game between the artist and his child: on the artist’s phone there is an app for identifying celestial bodies, and the child especially loves using it to find the moon. Often the moon has not yet reached a position where they can see it with the naked eye, and sometimes it appears during the daytime. Each time after finding it on the phone, they would always point out the direction of the moon in real life using the very gesture shown in the painting.
