The most direct bond between humans and nature lies in eating—in taking what the natural world offers for survival. Mushrooms are gifts of the wild, yet they carry something numinous and even toxic, suspended between the edible and the inedible, the ordinary and the hallucinatory. When one encounters a mushroom, one may see visions or fall into intoxication—comfort and fear, excitement and unease, all at once. In this encounter, one perceives within oneself the very numinous substance of nature, and through it, attains a fullness of being. The mushrooms in this work are not realist depictions; they are projections of self-generated visions—illusions made manifest through the body’s encounter with the wild.
