The lily was once a symbol of purity in art history, often appearing alongside the Virgin Mary in Renaissance paintings. By the 20th century, the lily was depicted by Robert Mapplethorpe as a symbol of eroticism. After 2000, scientists succeeded in cultivating a blue lily through genetic modification. By transforming an ordinary white lily into a blue one, the artist allows this ambiguous, hybrid symbol to enter into a dialogue with contemporary life.
