An Islander Who Hasn’t Been to Kowloon
The artist takes a map of Hong Kong Island as a boundary, cutting and stretching it into a 2-meter-high bronze column. The top of the column is bent downward, presenting the island’s cross-section to viewers and casting light upon the audience in Hong Kong. The work is inspired by the artist’s personal experience and reflects differing perceptions of the city: for mainland Chinese artists, Hong Kong is often imagined as the diverse, bustling districts of Kowloon, while for collectors living on Hong Kong Island, Kowloon is a “place rarely visited.” Through this gesture, the piece explores the contrast between personal experience and cultural perception, inviting viewers to reflect on spatial, social, and symbolic dimensions of the city.
