“Life on Mars” takes its inspiration from a casual photograph the artist took during a family trip to the Baltic Sea in Germany. What truly drew his attention was the transitional relationship between interior and exterior in the image, as well as the familiar yet slightly estranging feeling conveyed by the distant view. This feeling reminded him of the Cooper Station at the end of the film Interstellar: an artificial environment that visually approximates nature, in which technology is intentionally concealed. Driven by emotion and memory, humans reconstruct a familiar form of the world within it, making “nature” a designed outcome. This work is also influenced by Fra Angelico, particularly in his construction of spatial order and his treatment of details.
