Zhang Hua was born between the Wuliang Mountains and the Ailao Mountains, two ranges of the Hengduan system in Yunnan that have fundamentally shaped his perception of the world and nature. Wuliang Mountain and Wumian Mountain do not depict the mountains themselves, but transmute the visual vernacular and lived experience they imparted into copper silhouettes and serrated rhythms. They stand as the distillation of his personal history—tangible proofs of a homecoming that reasserts where he comes from.
