Echoes of Wenhai constructs a miniature ecological structure through the symbiotic relationship between a chair and a plant. The chair is inherently an artifact of power—it implies position, order, and hierarchy. Yet when it meets the wild, entwined with a plant called “One Incense” from the meadows of Yunnan, the power structure of the man-made interpenetrates with the sacredness of nature, giving rise to a new relation: power no longer stands above nature, but in symbiosis, it undergoes a spiritual transformation. The sound that gives the work its name is precisely what emanates from this tiny ecological structure—a murmur of the plant, an echo of the chair laying down its authority before the natural world.
