Sason
85 x 75 cm
Oil on canvas
2023~2024
This painting is called sason. The starting point of this work was my aim to capture the enchanting light in my Berlin studio, much like the interior scenes painted by many great Dutch masters whom I admire. I invited two friends to model for me, guiding them into a dreamlike state. Out of my fondness for a painting of two monkeys by Bruegel, housed in the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, I searched online for a suitable monkey image and placed it in the foreground of my painting. When my friend, Ilit, that front one, saw the painting, she was shocked by the monkey, as it looked exactly like one from her childhood—a real-life monkey with a tragic fate and a sorrowful ending. Its name was Sason, which means “joy” in Hebrew. I deeply cherish this fleeting moment where imagination and reality converge through painting.
