Dark Matter Ecology

Group Exhibition, Shanghai Bund Art Center • Space 185, Shanghai
The exhibition takes “Dark Matter” as its metaphorical starting point, gathering 18 important artists active in the international contemporary art scene. Through various media such as installations, paintings, videos and sounds, they jointly explore profound issues such as individual hidden pain, historical accumulation and the boundaries of existence.
“Xuanqi” is derived from the “dark matter” in the universe – a mysterious existence that cannot be observed by the naked eye but maintains the structure of galaxies and the order of the universe at the physical level. Curator Lu Mingjun introduces this scientific concept into the context of art, transforming it into a philosophical exploration of the inner spiritual structure and the “invisible power” : it is precisely those emotions, memories and experiences that are hard to express, concealed or long ignored that form the foundation of our understanding of the world and self-construction.
The exhibition site has constructed a multi-dimensional perceptual space. Eighteen artists, starting from their individual experiences and cultural perspectives, respond to the different aspects of “dark energy” with their own vocabulary – vulnerability and doubt, fracture and memory, dislocation and sewing. In their works, “the invisible” is no longer regarded as a hidden blank, but becomes the entrance to a more complex sense of existence. The exhibition encourages the audience to engage in a spiritual dialogue with the “invisible” through slow viewing and deep contemplation.
