Floating land
SUN Minqi
Double Exhibition, Galerie Oberwelt, Stuttgart, Germany

In a world that never stops shifting, belonging is no longer a fixed place but a condition that arises only temporarily.
Two Chinese artists who live and work in Germany constantly experience, in the context of migration and cultural overlapping, the existence of ‘non-places’: hovering between physical spaces as well as between language, identity and its shifts. Can ‘home’ still be defined as a geographical term? Or is it more a relationship in permanent flux?
Through the interaction of installation (video), performance, painting, text and space, we try to make visible a state between presence and absence – a way of existing that can neither fully arrive nor completely dissolve.
In such a space, identity does not remain stable, but is repeatedly formed anew in continuous motion. Likewise, belonging no longer refers to a destination, but appears more as an ongoing process.
As Su Shi wrote:
‘Life is like a journey against the current,
I, too, am only a traveller.’
Perhaps the only thing we can call ‘belonging’ is never found in arrival, but in staying for a while.
Opening on Friday, 26 June 7 pm
