Zone of Nowhere
XIE Qun
Group Exhibition, traverse, Langyuan Station, Beijing
Within traverse, an industrial ruin, time settles like stratified geological layers. Once deeply embedded in the logic of production, the site retains the temporal density and material memory of the industrial era. It points simultaneously to a concluded history of production and toward an open, as-yet-unfinished future. The exhibition”Zone of Nowhere”, situated within this real site, constructs a state of Liminality—detached from existing social orders yet not fully entered into a new structure. Multiple temporalities are superimposed upon one another, forming a synchronic field articulated through defamiliarized and fictionalized individual experiences: a mother goddess metamorphosing into a female corporeal body; an eternal day unfolding within a game; data cities erupting across ancient terrains; refuges within technological worlds… Across these intersecting temporal and spatial layers, the artists invariably project the complex condition of the human in the present. They invest these overlaps with expectation and affect, reshaping the present by traversing past and future. It is within the interweaving of the “space of experience” and the “horizon of expectation” that the tension of the contemporary moment is constituted.
